My nerves were getting the better of me as I pulled through the gate at Warden Global. As much as I hated to do it, Viktor needed to know about KiraâHeidr. Other than Alexander, no one knew about the incident in the forest with Amelia. People had their assumptions that the official story was bullshit, but on paper, sheâd slit her own throat rather than be stripped of her position.
There wasnât any way that Iâd discuss the particulars over the phone, so I had Heather call Justine to set the appointment. Told her I had questions about Kiraâs disappearance and needed to speak with him in person about the details.
Now, here I was, and I didnât know exactly what to say.
âHey, saw your daughter in Montreal yesterday and she tried to kill me.â
Probably not the smoothest of opening lines.
I put the car in park.
It was my hope that something better would come to mind before I reached his office on the third floor. Otherwise, our cozy relationship might come to an abrupt end. While Heidr was an issue, having Viktor turn on me would be so much worse. We were using his tech, people, and resources to prop up what was left of the Archive. Without him, we were dead with no hope of resurrection.
I strode through the front doors into the lobby to be met by Justine, Viktorâs significant other.
She smiled and wrapped her arms around me for a big hugâ¦okay, she was five-four, so as big of a hug as she could give. âGood to see you again, Gavin.â Releasing me, she stepped back and raised her gaze to mine. âSeems I owe you again for saving my friend.â
âYouâre welcome.â It was unusually warm in here as I glanced over at the staircase. âHe in his office?â
Justine hesitated. âYes, Iâm to walk you up.â
âThat isnât necessary, I know the way.â
Hooking her arm in mine, she pulled me toward the elevator. âNot exactly an option.â
Damn, did he know about what happened in Montreal? âUhâ¦okayâ¦the conversation thoughââ
ââWill be had amongst the four of us.â
âFour?â I arched an eyebrow. âNot sure an audience is needed.â
Reaching out, she pressed the up button. âWe think it is.â Her voice dropped slightly as we stepped into the car. âThere are things you need to know.â
That didnât sound positive.
âSureâ¦but Iâd like to have a private discussion with him as well.â
Justine sighed, pulled her phone out, and handed it to me as the elevator dinged for the third floor. There on the screen was a picture of me in full armor, scythe in hand, blocking the blow meant to take my head.
âOhâ¦I can explain.â
Justine bumped her shoulder into my arm. âItâs you who is owed the explanation.â Her voice trembled a bit. âPlease donât be angry with usâ¦we were doing our best to handle the situation on our own. Had we known sheâd go after the Archive, we wouldâve said something.â
Rubbing my temple, I said, âLetâs have this conversation with the others. Apparently, weâre all missing some important facts.
