August 20th

My nerves were getting the better of me as I pulled through the gate at Warden Global. As much as I hated to do it, Viktor needed to know about Kira—Heidr. Other than Alexander, no one knew about the incident in the forest with Amelia. People had their assumptions that the official story was bullshit, but on paper, she’d slit her own throat rather than be stripped of her position.

There wasn’t any way that I’d discuss the particulars over the phone, so I had Heather call Justine to set the appointment. Told her I had questions about Kira’s disappearance and needed to speak with him in person about the details.

Now, here I was, and I didn’t know exactly what to say.

“Hey, saw your daughter in Montreal yesterday and she tried to kill me.”

Probably not the smoothest of opening lines.

I put the car in park.

It was my hope that something better would come to mind before I reached his office on the third floor. Otherwise, our cozy relationship might come to an abrupt end. While Heidr was an issue, having Viktor turn on me would be so much worse. We were using his tech, people, and resources to prop up what was left of the Archive. Without him, we were dead with no hope of resurrection.

I strode through the front doors into the lobby to be met by Justine, Viktor’s significant other.

She smiled and wrapped her arms around me for a big hug…okay, she was five-four, so as big of a hug as she could give. “Good to see you again, Gavin.” Releasing me, she stepped back and raised her gaze to mine. “Seems I owe you again for saving my friend.”

“You’re welcome.” It was unusually warm in here as I glanced over at the staircase. “He in his office?”

Justine hesitated. “Yes, I’m to walk you up.”

“That isn’t necessary, I know the way.”

Hooking her arm in mine, she pulled me toward the elevator. “Not exactly an option.”

Damn, did he know about what happened in Montreal? “Uh…okay…the conversation though—”

“—Will be had amongst the four of us.”

“Four?” I arched an eyebrow. “Not sure an audience is needed.”

Reaching out, she pressed the up button. “We think it is.” Her voice dropped slightly as we stepped into the car. “There are things you need to know.”

That didn’t sound positive.

“Sure…but I’d like to have a private discussion with him as well.”

Justine sighed, pulled her phone out, and handed it to me as the elevator dinged for the third floor. There on the screen was a picture of me in full armor, scythe in hand, blocking the blow meant to take my head.

“Oh…I can explain.”

Justine bumped her shoulder into my arm. “It’s you who is owed the explanation.” Her voice trembled a bit. “Please don’t be angry with us…we were doing our best to handle the situation on our own. Had we known she’d go after the Archive, we would’ve said something.”

Rubbing my temple, I said, “Let’s have this conversation with the others. Apparently, we’re all missing some important facts.
